Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise inspired her love of artistic expression and creative thinking. The aunt was on the night shift in the role of a nurse so that she could continue her passion for literature and theatre throughout the day. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay realized that art could be an effective tool for promoting the cause of activism. DuVernay grew up with her mother who was well-informed and taught her how to utilize art as a method to express herself. DuVernay lived in Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born and brought up. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historic civil rights march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent town Selma Alabama. The time she spent in Selma Alabama led her to make a film that focused on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay received her graduation certificate at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. She enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay developed an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. She began as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being given the task of watching the family home, and then looking through the rubbish of one members of the juries. Following her disappointment with journalistic work by the assignments that she was assigned, the journalist determined to make a move as a publicist. DuVernay began her work as a junior public relations assistant in a tiny film studio just after she had graduated from the college. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999. The agency has launched a wide range different lifestyle and promotional networks such as Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
