Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, was born within Long Beach California. DuVernay was instilled with the desire to explore her love of art by her aunt Denise in her early years. She worked as a night nurse, allowing her aunt to have the time she needed during the day for the love of the arts, literature and theater. She showed DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay was captivated by it. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how the arts can serve to promote activism. DuVernay was additionally taught by her mom who was a social conscience and encouraged DuVernay to be creative and express herself through art. DuVernay, who grew up together with her parents in Compton and spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences was the civil rights protests on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. The summers she spent in Selma, Alabama led her later on to produce a film on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. Following graduation, she went to her first year at the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with diplomas in English and African American studies. When she was still an undergraduate student DuVernay was interested in creating in broadcast journalism. DuVernay was a journalist intern at CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to look over the rubbish at the residence of one of the jury. Her duties left her unhappy by journalism and she chose to switch careers into the publicity business. DuVernay got her first job as a PR professional in an unassuming production studio after her graduation. From this position she started her own company for public relations that was named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. She also started several lifestyle networks and promotions including her own Urban Beauty Collective. Autumn Riley.............................Autumn Riley was born in Los Angeles United States.
